Dorchester Literary Festival Writing Prize 2019

Travelling in the Dark has been shortlisted for this year’s award. The prizegiving, with guest Minette Walters, will take place on 18 July at the Duchess of Cornwall Inn, Poundbury, Dorset at 6pm.

Penzance Literary Festival, Friday 5 July

‘Landscapes of the Mind and Memory’, with Tom Vowler. A discussion of how the authors use natural environments to create complex ‘psychogeographies’ that reflect emotional and physical landscapes. We’ll also explore how our work makes use of the unstable boundaries between past and present, reality and fantasy.

The Creative Writing Group runs on Thursday evenings from 6.45 to 8.45pm. The dates for this term are Thursday 8 September until Thursday 15 December (no meeting on 27 October). £5 per session. Sunday 13 November, Looe Literary Festival 2016

On Sunday 13 November I am running a workshop on character from 10.30 to 12.30pm, at Truly Scrumptious. From 4 to 5pm, upstairs at the Black Swan, I’ll be giving a talk about the relationship between Katherine Mansfield and Anne Estelle Rice which led to Anne painting Katherine’s portrait in Looe in 1918.

New Creative Writing Group

This friendly and informal group looks at creative writing techniques. We use simple and enjoyable exercises to help you to begin to write your own stories, poetry and memoirs. The sessions are suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience.

Dates: 10 am to 12pm, Friday 22 and 29 April, 13, 20 and 27 May, 10, 17 and 24 June, 1, 8 and 15 July.

From September onwards, the group will meet on Thursday evenings. Details to follow.

Painting Katherine was inspired by the history surrounding Anne Estelle Rice’s ‘Portrait of Katherine Mansfield’, which was painted in Looe in May 1918. You can view an image of the portrait here

Celebration of the Tom-Gallon Trust Award


A celebration of The Society of Authors’ Tom-Gallon Award will be held on Saturday 16 May at the Darlington Arts Festival. My story, The Pledge, will be read by a Liars’ League actor alongside stories by other recent winners Carys Davies, Benjamin Myers and Samuel Wright.
